Titanium Electrode for Chlorine Gas Generator

The sodium hypochlorite generator employs a titanium anode water electrolysis cell as its core component, leveraging electrochemical reactions to produce sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) on-site. The process involves:
Electrolysis of Brine: A 3–5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution is electrolyzed. At the titanium anode, chloride ions (Cl⁻) are oxidized to chlorine gas (Cl₂), while at the cathode, water is reduced to hydrogen gas (H₂) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻) .
Chlorine-Hydroxide Reaction: The generated Cl₂ reacts with NaOH in the solution to form NaClO and NaCl:Cl2+2NaOH=NaCl+NaClO+H2O This reaction occurs in a monopolar series-connected electrolysis cell with natural circulation, ensuring uniform current distribution and high salt utilization efficiency .

Working Principle: The main reaction is NaCl + H₂O = NaClO + H₂↑. When an electric current passes through the salt – water solution, chloride ions (Cl⁻) are oxidized at the titanium anode to generate chlorine gas, and hydrogen ions (H⁺) are reduced at the cathode to form hydrogen gas. The generated chlorine gas reacts with the water and sodium hydroxide in the solution to produce sodium hypochlorite.
Anode Material and Coating: The anode usually adopts titanium as the substrate, and is coated with a ruthenium – iridium mixed metal oxide layer. This kind of coating has high electro – catalytic activity, which can reduce the over – potential of chlorine evolution, improve the electrolysis efficiency, and has excellent corrosion resistance, which can ensure the stable operation of the anode in the electrolytic cell, and its service life can reach 3 – 5 years.
Operational Conditions: The suitable salt – water concentration is generally 3% – 5%, the operating temperature is usually lower than 60°C, and the current density is ≤1000 A/m².
Structural Features: It often adopts a monopolar series – connection structure, which is matched with a natural circulation system, and can operate continuously for 200 – 300 hours. This structure is beneficial to the uniform distribution of current, improves the utilization rate of salt, and increases the production rate of sodium hypochlorite.
